How to grow asparagus plants

Image
How To : • Choose a sunny part of the garden with good drainage. • Dig a trench and check the pH, which should be 6.5 to 7.5. • Plant the crowns about 8 in. deep and 15 in. apart. • Cover initially with 2 in. of dirt, and gradually fill the trench as the spears emerge. • The edible stems of asparagus rise directly from the ground. Spears that are about 8 in. tall are ready to harvest. • Snapping of the spear by hand is easy and protects the plant. You can use a knife, but be careful not to damage developing stems. • At the end of the harvest, allow the asparagus plants to form ferns. These help transfer energy to the roots for good spear development the next season From : vegetablegardener.com

Growing broccoli at home

Image
When to Plant : For spring/summer broccoli harvest, start seeds indoors 6 to 9 weeks before last frost and place in the garden 1 to 3 weeks prior to last frost. For fall/winter harvest, sow seeds directly in the garden 10 to 12 weeks before first frost. Soil : Well-drained soil amended with compost. Watering : Keep well watered. Mulch helps keep roots cool and moist during hot weather. Pest Problems : Cabbage loopers and imported cabbageworms are voracious caterpillars that can make alarmingly short work of the leaves. Their color camouflages them on the plant perfectly, so you'll notice their damage before you find them. When to Harvest : Harvest when heads have reached full size but before they loosen.

Direct-sow only after night temperatures are consistently in the 50s. Plant in blocks of at least 3 rows, at least 3 feet long apiece, to ensure best pollination. Hand-pollinate by gently shaking plants toward one another if you cannot devote this much space. Watering : Requires ample water especially during fruiting -- up to 2 inches per week. Pest Problems : Birds and raccoons, Japanese beetles. Corn earworms. Fertilizing : Corn is unique in that it grows above ground. Apply according to rates indicated on package before fruit set.
