Image
You'll need : A plastic half-gallon jug, A 2-liter soda bottle, A sharp knife, Rooting hormone , Pruners we will use the bottom of the milk jug as a pot, and the top of the soda bottle as a top to create a mini greenhouse for your cutting. First use the knife to cut holes in the bottom of the milk jug for drainage. Then fill the jug to within an inch of the rim with potting mix , water thoroughly, and let it drain. Take a stem with 5 or 6 leaflets. Cut the bottom of the stem below the last leaflet, at a 45 degree angle toward the back of the bud like this. Use the knife to lightly score the bottom of the cutting on two or three sides. Dip your cutting into rooting hormone , and shake off any excess. Place the cutting in the hole about 2 inches deep. How do you water a small cactus

Image
Water cactus when dry, NOT BONE DRY! That's a very quick way to kill a cactus. When the cactus is allowed to become bone dry, the small roots will die. Then you water the plant, it has no roots, and it rots. Make sure your cactus is receiving a lot of light and warmth. If your plant is in a plastic pot, it's easy to tell if it's dry, just lift it up and judge it's weight. In the winter, the air in your house is quite dry. So, if the plant is actively taking up water, it will need water quite often, maybe weekly. If the plant is not taking up water, it will take much longer to dry out. When you water, give the plant a good soaking, not just a little water. The world's deserts get infrequent soaking rains. I read a story about a man who was growing cactus in New England, he used to read the weather reports for Phoenix, Arizona and when it rained there he watered his cactus. You can buy this neat little Arizona Cactus Garden it come in a Glazed Pot and it mak...

How to Root Plant Clippings

Image
Instructions: Wait for the flowers to bloom and fall off. Once the bush starts to sprout out little kelly green shoots, clip off 12-20 of those new shoots. Clip just below two leaves and immediately put the clippings in a cup of water so they won’t dry out. Set up a seedling tray full of a compost and/or potting soil mixture. Select a clipping out of the water and shake any excess water off, but do not dry. Strip any leaves off the stem where it will be inserted below the dirt. Dip the clipping into the rooting hormone powder up to where the dirt level will stop. Shake any excess back into the bottle. Carefully insert the clipping into the hole you made in the dirt (you want to avoid disturbing the powder.) Gently press dirt back around the clipping. After all the clippings have been planted, water the soil until it is moist, but don’t drown your clippings. Set your clippings in a sunny window that will receive a few hours of sun daily. Or you can set your tray in a pro...

Self-Watering spike

Image
I half expected these things not to work and out plants would be dead after returning from a holiday vacation. Surprisingly, as simple as these are they worked great. Plants kept with constant moisture. Now we leave them in all the time and just refill the vases. Someone should make a tank that can clip on the outside of the pot. Only note is that you need to fill the ceramic plug completely full with water and immerse the tubes to ensure the capillary action works to pull water into the spike. you can get them from HERE
